A one day course is offered in Coventry to support their new MICROFOUNDRY system for casting custom jewellery items in Brass, Bronze, Silver or Gold. The course objectives are:
- To be confident in setting up a MICROFOUNDRY and to use it SAFELY in your own home
- To provide a day of creative crafting for anyone with no previous experience in casting Bronze or Silver items from wax models.

BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE COURSE
Explanation of lost wax investment casting, types of wax, ways of forming the original wax model, hot and cold Carving, Moulding by Gravity, Injection and Machining. Students will inject their wax into a vulcanized rubber mould.

Mounting your wax model for investing, properties of a good investing powder, problems due to excessive porosity in the solid investment.

Safe environment for working. Safety in handling furnaces. The need for gloves, glasses, tongs and thermometer. Melting out the bulk of the wax, Burning out the remaining wax residues, Measuring the temperature of the furnaces for handling and the temperature of the flask when ready for pouring.
Choosing suitable metals, melting temperatures, pouring temperatures, alloying of metals for fluidity, colour, strength.Temperature measurement by Thermocouple, Pyrometric cones, IR non-contacting thermometer

Melting the metal, need for flux, stirring, drossing, pouring. Students will use gravity casting.

Quenching, de-flasking, de-sprueing, final shaping and cleaning the cast silver charm.
Identifying any defects in terms of poor procedure.
Silver soldering as a means of fabricating small castings into larger works or for ‘repair’ of a partially lost / broken feature. ‘Hard’ soldering is carried out if the work requires it.

The course is run at Compucut, 15 Allesley Old Road, Coventry. CV5 8BU
The training classroom has TWO full sets of Waxing / Casting equipment enabling a maximum of TWO students per course, to produce jewellery castings in Silver from injected wax models.
Note, the training workshop is on a FIRST floor level with NO wheelchair access.

Courses can be run on week days or weekends to suit mutual convenience. Once the date is ‘booked’ then a cheque is mailed to R BARTLETT at least ONE week prior to the course. The cost covers all materials including 8g of Sterling Silver for each cast charm.

A booked course can be re-scheduled without penalty as long as 24 hours notice is given.

Normal timetable is 10.00am to approx 5.00pm It is not unreasonable for some students to require more time to complete their work, so plan for a flexible finish time if possible.
Wear or bring ‘hobby / craft’ clothing including sensible shoes, if you have long hair bring a hairnet or means to tie it back. Bring a packed lunch, Tea / Coffee are freely available all day.
Car parking is on-site (in front of No15, CV5 8BU).
If TRAVELLING BY TRAIN: Arriving at Coventry train station, 10-minutes by taxi to ‘THE FOUR PROVINCES’ public house on Allesley Old Road, Spon End. Compucut is next door but one. For visitors travelling by train, an alternative start time can be arranged if required.
